Marianas High School 1 and 2 and Kagman High School 1 earned perfect records in the pool play matches in the 2019 Public School System 3×3 Basketball Tournament last Saturday at the MHS Gymnasium.
In the girls division, MHS 1 had a 4-0 record after beating MHS 1 and Saipan Southern High School twice. In the boys contest, Kagman 1 and MHS 2 are ahead in their respective groups. The top finishers in the three pools will get higher seeding when the tournament holds its playoff round on March 9.
Kagman 1 wrapped up its Pool 1 assignments with a 4-0 mark after defeating KHS 3, SSHS 1 and 3 and MHS 1. SSHS 3 was ranked second with its 3-1 slate, followed by MHS 1 (2-2), SSHS 1 (1-3), and KHS 3 (0-4).
In Pool 2, MHS 2 also secured a 4-0 card for the top spot, while Da’Ok placed second with its 3-1 record. MHS 3 (2-2), KHS 2 (1-3), and SSHS 2 (0-4) rounded out the team standings.
“All the teams that participated (in pool play) will earn the higher seeds in the tournament (playoffs) scheduled for March 9. We are still allowing additional teams to enter the tournament and really hopeful that we can get additional girls teams,” PSS Athletic Department director Nick Gross said.
Rota and Tinian schools were also invited to the tournament, which had its playoffs originally scheduled for March 2, but was moved to March 9 to give way to other events.
PSS is supposed to have the playoff round of its middle school grass volleyball tournament (playoffs) and 4×4 co-ed elementary basketball (pool play) this Saturday, but the two events were postponed and rescheduled to March 2 after Saipan was placed under a typhoon watch.
“Due to the uncertainty associated with the storm forming in the south-east of the Marianas, I have elected to postpone the scheduled 4×4 co-ed basketball tournament this weekend and the middle school 4×4 grass volleyball championships,” Gross said.
The championship round in the elementary basketball tournament will be played on March 9, too, at the Koblerville Gymnasium.
