Marianas High School bounced back from an opening set loss to pull off a 5-25, 25-23, 17-15 triumph over Mt. Carmel School in the 2014 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Boys Volleyball League yesterday at the MHS Gymnasium.

MHS’ varsity improved to 5-1 after handing Grace Christian Academy its first loss in an earlier match, 25-14, 25-23, 12-15.

The Dolphins, playing in the final game of the day against the Knights, were outplayed the entire first set as their players’ spikes and kills failed to hit the mark. Fatigue could also be a factor in their opening set loss as they rested for only a few minutes after beating the GCA Eagles.

MHS then played more relaxed in the second frame to enjoy a 24-19 edge before MCS scored four straight points to move within one. Riczi Cano saved the Dolphins from an impending collapse, as he found a hole in the Knights’ defense with a backline hit to tie the game.

In the third set, MHS zoomed to a 5-0 lead and foiled the Knights’ numerous comeback bids to complete the victory.

In other results last Thursday, Mt. Carmel downed MHS’ junior varsity team, 25-18, 20-25, 15-4; Saipan International School’s junior varsity squad tripped Saipan Southern High School varsity, 25-20, 25-20, 15-5; SIS’ varsity handed SSHS JV a 25-9, 25-12, 15-7 beating ; and Kagman High School won by forfeit against SSHS JV.

Last Tuesday, SIS’ JV side played back-to-back games against Marianas Baptist Academy and Mt. Carmel. The Geckos posted a 25-23, 25-20, 15-12 sweep against the Stormz then dealt the Knights a 14-25, 26-24, 16-14 beating. SIS’ varsity team clipped MHS, 25-11, 25-13, 15-8.

SSHS went 1-1 after dropping a 25-16, 7-25, 6-15 decision against GCA and winning against Kagman, 20-25, 26-24, 15-7. SSHS junior varsity escaped with a 25-23, 17-25, 18-16 triumph over MBA. (Jon Perez)
