Northern Marianas College nursing graduates Maria Calma and Sean Apasan have joined the long list of NMC students who have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses or NCLEX-RN.

Nursing graduates must pass the NCLEX-RN to be able to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse.

The exam tests the knowledge, skills, and abilities of nursing graduates to certify that they can apply entry-level nursing practices correctly.

NMC Nursing Department Chair Rosa Aldan said, “We extend our congratulations to Maria and Sean on passing the NCLEX-RN Exam! Your dedication and hard work have paid off, and we are so proud of your achievements! We are eager for both of you to lead a bright and impactful future as registered nurses.”

“The College is immensely proud of the ever-growing list of students who are passing the NCLEX-RN,” NMC President Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD said. “Congratulations to Maria and Sean on passing this rigorous exam.” Maria Calma, a 2024 NMC nursing graduate, commemorates her pursuit of a nursing degree toward her childhood dream of caring for others and making meaningful impacts in their lives.

“From an early age, I felt a deep calling to support and heal those in need,” she expressed. “This passion has only grown stronger over the years, driving me to pursue a career where I can combine my desire to help people with the scientific knowledge and skills required to provide exceptional care.”

Throughout Calma’s educational journey leading up to the exam, she highlighted the invaluable support from her family, friends, and mentors. Furthermore, she acknowledged the NMC nursing program staff and curriculum as an exceptional source of support as they provided hands-on learning through clinical experiences and well-structured lessons.

“Additionally, I adhered to a structured study plan, using various resources and practice materials to strengthen my understanding and address my weaknesses. Above all, I am deeply grateful for the guidance and strength I received from God; His influence was a pivotal factor in my success,” she said.

In advice to other NMC students planning to take the NCLEX, Calma stated that while the journey may be extremely challenging, the rewards are well worth the effort. She underlined the importance of a strong support network, as it will also make a significant difference in studies.

“Additionally, prioritize self-care and balance in your study routine to maintain your well-being,” she said. “Perseverance, combined with a supportive environment and balanced approach, will help you navigate the path to becoming a successful nurse.”

Sean Apasan, a 2022 NMC nursing graduate, gets his passion for the nursing profession from his desire to take care of people during times of need. Additionally, it was a profession that would allow him to financially provide for his family and himself.

“I would like to first thank my family, my girlfriend, my past instructors, and many others who supported my journey towards passing the exam. Their unyielding support was a large moral boost for me personally and ultimately drove me to pass the exam,” Asapan expressed.

He also believes that his position as a Graduate Nurse at CHCC’s Psychiatric Unit was a factor that contributed toward his successful passage of the exam, as this experience allowed him to physically be in situations that are often simulated in the NCLEX.

Apasan noted that through NMC’s nursing program, he was able to utilize preparation tools such as Kaplan resource materials and clinical experiences. “I would also have to commend the instructors of the program as they were really knowledgeable and passionate about teaching all there is to know about nursing,” he said.

In his message to students who are planning to take the NCLEX, he urges them to not give up.

“Effort combined with just the ability to never give up will serve you well in passing the exam as well as future endeavors. Finding out what works for you in regards to learning the content is also equally important as what works for other people might not work for you,” he stated. “Be positive and believe in yourself as you are so close to becoming an RN.

Calma and Apasan are both in the process of applying for RN positions within the CNMI’s local healthcare industry.
