Nenpou Shinkyo Buddhist Denomination will be holding a peace ceremony at Banzai Cliff in Marpi this month.
To prepare the site for the service, Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said the Saipan Mayor’s Office will be conducting a cleanup before the peace ceremony.

About a 150 members of the Nenpou Shinkyo Buddhist Denomination will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Peace Memorial service is set for Saturday and Sunday with the unveiling of two monuments in Marpi.

“We will be helping in the cleanup for our guests because they come every year honoring the dead and hold peace ceremonies. I encourage those who can help to come out and join us at Marpi,” Apatang said.

This will be the biggest number yet since 2009 when 200 Buddhists flew to Saipan to take part in the ceremony. However, due to the limited space for flights from Japan, not a lot of them will be joining this year.

The Nenpou Shinkyo Buddhist Denomination, which has about 88 shrines all over Japan, used to send hundreds of guests to this event to pray for all who perished during World War II.

This is the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Nenpou Shinkyou Buddhist Denomination.

Apatang also noted that the Nenpou Shinkyou Buddhist will be performing at the Taste of the Marianas this Saturday where they traditionally perform Ryukyu dances from Japan.
