NMI to get $42K historic preservation grant
The U.S. Department of the Interior, with the National Park Service, announced Friday that it is awarding $42,488 in historic preservation grants to the Northern Mariana Islands.
This is part of $21 million that will be awarded across the nation. A total of $184,478 will be awarded to the Federated States of Micronesia; $106,914 to Palau; $172,372 to Hawaii; $41,139 to Guam; and $30,959 to American Samoa.
Administered by the National Park Service, these funds are appropriated annually by Congress from the Historic Preservation Fund. The HPF funds preservation programs at State Historic Preservation Offices.
Since its inception in 1977, the HPF has provided more than $1.2 billion in historic preservation grants to states, tribes, local governments, and non-profit organizations. Funded at $80 million in 2017, the HPF does not use any tax dollars. It is supported solely by Outer Continental Shelf oil lease revenues.
