On June 8, the Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the Divert Activities and Exercises was released for public review. The U.S. Air Force will be conducting several public information hearings to allow the public to submit comments on the draft EIS.

This EIS studies the potential impacts of the proposed action of developing divert capabilities within the CNMI. This will ensure mission capability requirements by establishing a location to support and conduct emergency divert requirements, joint military training and exercises, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief activities in the event that access to Joint Region Marianas-Andersen or other Western Pacific locations are limited or denied. The two possible locations considered were Saipan International Airport and Tinian International Airport.

The U.S. Air Force will be hosting two informational sessions on Saipan for the residents of Koblerville and Dandan because of their proximity to the airport, they will be the most impacted.

The first pre-hearing community outreach session for Koblerville residents will be on Saturday, June 23, at Saipan Southern High School’s cafeteria from 4pm to 6pm. On Sunday, June 24, for the Dandan residents, the second session will be held at Dandan Elementary School’s cafeteria from 4pm to 6pm.

On Monday, June 25, there will be a general public hearing at the Multi-Purpose Center from 5pm to 8pm.

On Tuesday, June 26, there will be a public hearing on Tinian at the Tinian Elementary School’s cafeteria from 5pm-8pm. On Wednesday, June 27, there will be a public information meeting on Rota at the Mayor’s Office from 4pm to 5:30pm.

The public hearings allow the public an opportunity to provide verbal comments that will become part of the record for the EIS development process. The public can continue to submit comments during the comment period, which is for 45 days and ends on July 23.
