Public warned of hazardous surf

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center, a large swell from distant Super Typhoon Champi will continue to generate hazardous surf for the Marianas the next few days.

A high surf advisory is now in effect until 6pm Monday. Surf will be hazardous at 12 to 14 feet on west facing reefs and 7 to 9 feet on north facing reefs today.

Surf along west and north facing reefs will remain hazardous for several more days.

A small craft advisory for hazardous seas remains in effect until 6pm today, Tuesday. Seas will continue to subside today and fall below advisory levels this evening.

Mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions. Breaking waves can capsize even larger vessels. Avoid venturing into the water along exposed reefs and beaches especially those facing north and west as rip currents will be life threatening. (HSEM)
