Public warned of jellyfish hazard
A warning has been issued about the presence of box jellyfish in Marianas beaches in the next several days.
Citing information provided by the Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources at the Guam Department of Agriculture, the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, warned that there is a high potential for large quantities of box jellyfish to appear in waters along shorelines and on beaches of the Mariana Islands the next several days.
A beach hazards statement is now in effect through Sunday afternoon.
The CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point is advising swimmers and beach goers to stay alert and report sightings of jellyfish to lifeguards, hotel management, or authorities. If jellyfish are seen, avoid contact and stay away. Folks planning to spend extended amounts of time in the water should consider wearing full-body wetsuits.
The public is advised to remain watchful for box jellyfish and avoid touching them. (EOC)
