Rotary Club finishes dictionary distribution for third graders
The Rotary Club of Saipan has finished distributing its dictionaries for school year 2014-2015.
According to Rotary vocational director Thomas Thornburgh, a total of 886 dictionaries were distributed to third graders this year.
“It was a tough project but well worth it for the literacy of our students, which is something that is always needed in public and private schools every year,” Thornburgh said.
Nine public schools received the dictionaries: Koblerville, Kagman, Oleai, William S. Reyes, Garapan, Gregorio T. Camacho, San Vicente, Sinapalo, and Tinian elementary schools.
Eleven private schools also benefited: Mount Carmel School, Whispering Palms School, Brilliant Star School, Eucon International School, Grace Christian Academy Rota, Eskuelan San Francisco De Borja, Grace Christian Academy Saipan, Saipan Community School, Saipan International School, Golden Harvest, and Seventh Day Adventist.
Garapan Elementary School received the most dictionaries with 117.
According Thornburgh, two private schools—Tinian Grace Christian Academy and Agape School in Saipan—closed before they could give them the dictionaries this school year.
“To be fair, we must note to distribute to both the third graders and fourth graders of these schools next year,” he added.
Rotary started the distributing the dictionaries last March and finished in early June. Various club members helped out in the distribution such as president Richard Cody, director Marcia Ayuyu, and Rotarian Wendell Posadas.
Rotary has a total of 694 dictionaries left and will be ordering again for distribution during school year 2015-2016.
