State of disaster, emergency continued for 8th month

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres continued to effect a state of major disaster and emergency in the Commonwealth, the eighth time the state of disaster has been issued following Typhoon Soudelor last August.

Torres signed the executive order on Tuesday, March. 22.

“Typhoon Soudelor caused significant damage to public and private property,” the declaration states.

In the earlier executive orders, the lack of utility services and disruption to critical infrastructure were cited in the declaration of disaster and emergency.

Typhoon Soudelor struck the CNMI on Aug. 2. As acting governor then, Torres first issued the declaration of disaster on Aug. 3, 2015.

On Aug 5, 201,5 President Barack Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the CNMI allowing for federal aid to the CNMI after the typhoon.

The Torres administration reported a deficit of $9.1 million for the fiscal year 2015, largely attributing this to Typhoon Soudelor and the network outage last July.
