The Southern Thunder put their opening day loss to the Eastern Lightning behind them to score a 40-14 win against the Northern Vikings in Week 2 of the Commonwealth Football League Association Youth League last Saturday at the CPA Airport Field.

The Thunder suffered a 40-20 humbling against the reigning titlist Lightning at the start of the 2014 season on Nov. 29 before bouncing back quickly against the Vikings.

Quarterback Brent Azarcon had two rushing touchdowns in leading the Southern Thunder to victory, as he ran a combined 14 yards in the first and second quarters to help the Jermain Catching-coached squad enjoy a 26-6 cushion at the turn.

Azarcon scored his first TD, a 6-yard run, early in the first period after failing to find an open teammate against the Vikings defense. His second TD, this time an 8-yard sprint to the end zone, had the Thunder holding on to the 20-point lead.

His TDs sandwiched similar strikes of Matthew Reyes, 7-yard TD run, and N-Nes Siech’s 5-yard sprint. Jeremy Agulto made the 2-point conversion, a 3-yard dash, for a 20-0 count with four minutes gone in the second canto.

Derrick Aguon got the Vikings on the scoreboard following a 31-yard run midway in the second quarter.

Don Pangelinan’s 15-yard run, off a 5-yard penalty after a false start by the Northern offense, resulted in Aguon’s TD.

However, the lucky break failed to ignite the Joe Ocampo-mentored Northern side’s offense as they were grounded by the Thunder defense the entire third quarter.

Napu Atalig scored on a 12-yard TD, while Franko Bundoc had a 3-yard run for the 2-point conversion to give the Thunder a 34-6 spread entering the fourth period.

Lightning quarterback Anthony Quitugua scored the team’s other TD, a 14-yard run early in the fourth. Neldreyton Skera made the 2-point conversion, a 3-yard sprint for a 14-34 tally.

Atalig scored another 12-yard TD in the closing seconds of the fourth, 40-14, which became the final tally, as Jerrett Rosario took a knee and the referee blew his whistle.

Atalig had 104 of the Thunder’s 298 yards rushing, while Azarcon made 16 of his team’s 37 passing yards.
