Emma Timmons of the CNMI mock trial team was recognized as an outstanding student-attorney at the National High School Mock Trial Competition in Athens, Georgia, that was held from May 16 to 18, 2019.
Timmons got fourth place in the coveted Top 10 attorneys of the entire competition.
The CNMI was represented by Marianas High School at the competition. Over the course of two days, 46 teams competed in four rounds. These teams came from the various states, the CNMI, Guam, and South Korea.
The CNMI ranked 38 out of the 46 teams that competed.
This year’s national mock trial problem was a civil case revolving around the burnt remains of the Georgia Theatre, a famous Athens music venue. Competitors were tasked with convincing a panel of scoring jurors who committed arson and burnt down the Georgia Theatre.
Besides Timmons, Team CNMI also includes Kelvin Wolf, Shea Hartig, Cole Chambers, Vivien Liu, Marielle Sambilay, Jonathan Wolf, Steven An, and Jonah Pohl.
Three other team members accompanied the team as alternates: Ainah Chargualaf, Jerrid Igisaiar, and Esther Huh.
The faculty coach for the team is Donald Cohen, and the attorney coaches are Doug Hartig and Christopher Timmons.
Participation in this competition was made possible through the support of the CNMI Public School System, CNMI Bar Association, CNMI Judiciary, Saipan Northern Islands Legislative Delegation, CNMI Historical Society, and various other government and private entities.
“The team worked extraordinarily hard, representing the CNMI very well as a first-time team from Marianas High School. We are all extremely proud of the students and thankful for their coaches,” said Gretchen Smith, 2019 CNMI Mock Trial coordinator. (Saipan Tribune/PR)
