Tinian school projects begin in 2017
The Senate Committee on Education and Youth Affairs, together with Tinian and Aguiguan Legislative Delegation chair Jude U. Hofschneider (R-Tinian), talked with Public School officials how added funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be spent.
Public Law 19-31 authorized PSS to enter into a loan agreement with USDA to fund the construction of additional classrooms and Early Head Start Centers, and pave roads and parking lots on Tinian and Rota public schools.
PL 19-31, originally marked as House Bill 19-39, was introduced by Rep. Antonio M. Sablan (Ind-Saipan) along with several of his colleagues, in January this year. The loan totals $5 million and a portion of it would go to Tinian.
It was only recently that both parties agreed on the fund amount after a number of discussions and other setbacks. The pavement of the Tinian Elementary School parking lot and construction of an alternative entrance for the Tinian Early Head Start Program are the projects to be done.
Construction will begin in mid- or late-January 2017, where the completion of the project is expected around May or before the school year ends.
Hofschneider said the projects would benefit the people of Tinian, especially the students of TES and EHS. “It has been a tedious journey but finally we have met our objective as to securing the funds for the much needed improvement of both TES and the Head Start program.”
“One of my main concerns is of the safety, health, and welfare of the students during the dry season. …[but] the end result of this project would benefit the community tremendously.”
He commended the hard work done by all education officials and other individuals that helped in the project.
“I commend the continuous dedication of CNMI PSS officials, the Board of Education, the CNMI Legislature, the Department of Public Works, and the Governor’s Office for coming together to achieve this major undertaking,” added Hofschneider.
