The Department of Commerce, Alcoholic Beverage and Tobacco Control Division, in collaboration with the Division of Public Health of the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp., are conducting a joint Tobacco Merchant Workshop today, March 29, 2012, at the Multi-Purpose Building in Susupe. The workshop is from 9am to 11am, with a total of 100 retail establishments confirmed to attend.

According to Division of Public Health’s Reyna M. Saures, “The workshop aims to educate and train the participants on the importance of reducing, if not eliminat[ing], the use of tobacco products by our youths in the CNMI. The program also targets the updates of laws, and the critical issues of retail stores selling tobacco products and the emphasis in combating and preventing the use of tobacco products by minor under 18 years of age.”

“The workshop will also cover discussions relating to tobacco products or cigarette brands that are prohibited [by law] for importation, distribution, and sell in the CNMI, including the latest results in the enforcement of contraband cigarettes,” said Alcoholic Beverage and Tobacco Control Division director David R. Maratita.
