Torres joins governors at summer meeting
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has joined the nation’s governors in Salt Lake City, Utah, for the National Governors Association’s annual Summer Meeting, during which state and territorial chief executives share best practices and hold working sessions that range in a variety of policy areas.
During the three-day meeting, NGA will launch an Outdoor Recreation Learning Network in partnership with governors and state outdoor recreation directors. This network will help governors and their staff explore strategies to leverage their unique natural, cultural and historical resources to yield economic, social and environmental benefits for current and future generations.
The CNMI was recently awarded a competitive grant of $131,162 by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service to plan and develop a new comprehensive outdoor recreation plan for 2019-2024.
“This competitive grant award we recently received from the National Park Service allows us to develop a brand-new community strategy that maximizes our culture and environment into new outdoor activities and areas for our youth, our families, and our community as a whole. Sharing these best practices will go a long way in developing the plans we have in place with our staff at [the Department of Lands and Natural Resources] and at [the Division of] Parks and Recreation,” Torres said.
The agenda for the Summer Meeting also includes sessions on human trafficking, disconnected youth, resilience, cybersecurity workforce, roadway safety, early learning, and rural and disinvested communities.
“…The CNMI faces complex, but shared challenges faced by many other states and territories. The NGA meetings serve as a great place to share valuable solutions, instead of dwelling on problems…,” Torres said.
Torres is also scheduled to meet with officials of the U.S. Department of Defense on military activities in the CNMI, as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency to continue the partnership for the CNMI’s ongoing recovery efforts from Super Typhoon Yutu. (PR)
