Incumbent Gov. Ralph DLG Torres and his running mate, Sen. Vinnie Sablan (R-Saipan) have called for a gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial debate as part of the runoff election, but reportedly there has been no response yet from the opposing camp of Lt. Gov. Arnold Palacios and Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang.

In a statement, Torres and Sablan said: “Once again our dear people of the CNMI deserve the opportunity to fully compare us directly as candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, before they decide who will lead our islands for the next four years. We publicly asked for a debate and Palacios and Apatang agreed ‘Anytime and Anywhere’ in their press conference. But they have failed to respond and are backing out of…the debate challenge.

“Again, we are calling for a gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial debate—one-on-one on the same evening one after the other—to give our people an open discussion about our respective plans for the future. We hope that the Palacios-Apatang campaign supports having a real debate on the issues and will respond…” (PR)
