UFO caging kicks off Saturday
The 2015 United Filipino Organization Basketball League will open shop this Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Participating teams are requested to assemble at the Oleai Sports Complex, starting at 4:30pm, as the opening ceremony will take place at 5:30pm. The league was originally set to open last Sunday, but the kick-off was rescheduled due to Tropical Storm Bavi.
Eleven teams are seeing action in this year’s basketball competition with six entered in the Masters division and five in the U20 age group. Armatech/MDX, LBT/Visminda, DL Corp./Triskelion, MAFEA, Blue Haus/MIFICPA, and Lips are battling for the Masters crown, while 670 Sonics/Lips, Blue Haus, NMBA, Jay Team/MDX, and Namfrel are fighting for the U20 championship.
Blue Haus is the defending champion in the Masters division as it prevailed against Armatech in the 2013 finals. The league did not have a contest in the U20 division in the last two years with a Division of Youth Services-sponsored team the last squad to clinch the age group crown after beating MDX in the 2012 finals, 74-69.
Meanwhile, this weekend’s opening games will be determined via raffle draws and the succeeding matches will be played every Wednesday and Saturday as the gym is still hosting games from another league on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
