The University of Guam has hired Douglas Palmer as its new athletic director. Palmer joins UOG after serving as the head athletic director for Shoreline Community College in Washington state for the last seven years.

“I’m very excited to be at UOG,” Palmer said. “This is my dream job—it’s a unique situation, and I want to eventually have every major sport on the island covered here.”

He earned a bachelor of science in physical education from Winthrop University in 1982 and a master’s of athletic administration from Florida State University two years later.

Palmer has an extensive history in serving in administrative roles and coaching in higher education. He served as the assistant volleyball and softball coach at the University of South Carolina for a year. Under his instruction, the softball team finished 3rd in the NCAA Division I in 1983. The next year, he moved to Florida State University to focus his skills as a hitting coach for the FSU women’s softball team until 1985.

Palmer spent the next 21 years at the University of West Florida, initially as a head softball coach where his team won the NAIA National Softball Championship in 1993—his last year of coaching at that university—and later moving on to administrative roles at UWF for 13 years before becoming the head athletic director at Shoreline Community College.

UOG vice president of Administration and Finance Randall Wiegand said he’s excited to see Palmer spearhead the relaunch of the Triton Athletics program and pave the way for the addition of more University sports in the near future. Currently, the UOG Tritons Men’s Basketball Team is playing in the Guam Basketball Association.

“After nearly 15 years, we’ve relaunched the Triton Athletics Program after nearly 15 years, and Doug brings the experience and knowledge we need to hit the ground running,” Wiegand said. “We hope to enhance the overall student experience at UOG by giving our young people a chance to develop academically and athletically.” (PR)
