‘Welding defects’ on Tank 102 project

Some welding defects have been detected on the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s Tank 102 project.

Speaking before the utilities board at a recent meeting, CUC counsel James Sirok said that X-rays taken indicated weld defects on the tank floor.

According to Sirok, they worked with the project’s construction manager, Gilbane Federal, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the matter.

According to him, the X-rays revealed a “number of defects,” and EPA would provide the certificate for the welders who would work on this issue.

Last December, Gilbane Federal was selected by the U.S. District Court to expeditiously complete some CUC projects ordered by a 2009 stipulated order.

The Tank 102 project involves a 500,000-gallon diesel fuel tank that will replace Tank 010, which has been found to be a source of pollution and is non-repairable.
