Whispering Palms School appoints new head of school
Jeff La Roux
Whispering Palms School announces the hiring of Jeff La Roux as head of school for the 2016-2017 school year. La Roux is from Michigan and has been an administrator for over 20 years. For the past three years, he has taught English and music and was the head of secondary education at an international school in Qingdao, China.
He is a former director of Meadow Montessori High School, where he taught AP classes and worked with students on independent learning. As the new head of school at WPS, he is interested in supporting students to take ownership of their learning through goal setting and student-led conferencing. He is excited to come to Saipan to lead the school and said, “I’m looking forward to working with students, teachers, and parents to make our school a community of learners.” La Roux believes that students should come to work in a fun, interesting, and challenging environment.
La Roux is the former president of the Association for Middle Level Educators, an international professional organization devoted to children’s education between the ages of 10 and 15. He also served as president of the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators and sponsored the state conference at his middle school in Monroe, Michigan. He has been a presenter at professional development conferences on the topic of student advisory groups.
He and his wife, Emilie, are passionate about music. They met in high school as musicians in an honors band event and were assigned to the same host family. Together, they founded the community band in East Jordan, Michigan. La Roux has taught wind and string instruments, and conducted the pit orchestra for several musicals in Monroe, Michigan. The La Rouxes have one daughter who studies Chinese at the University of Michigan.
