66 confirmed dengue cases in Vanuatu

Vanuatu’s Ministry of Health has confirmed there were 66 confirmed cases of dengue fever at the end of December.

A statement from the ministry of health said there were 359 suspected cases and only 66 were confirmed to be positive.

It said only six out of the 66 infected people were admitted to the Vila central hospital while the rest were taken care of at home.

The health ministry is encouraging the public to make every effort to destroy mosquito breeding sites and to visit the nearest health centre if there are signs of dengue fever, such as high fever, severe abdominal pain, rash, persistent vomiting or bleeding.

Symptoms of dengue can appear between four and seven days after a mosquito bite. (Radio New Zealand)
