NMTI sets to submit budget request on Thursday
The Northern Marianas Technical Institution is getting ready to submit its budget proposal for fiscal year 2021 this Thursday, April 15, according to NMTI interim chief executive officer Jodina Attao, even as they anticipate more funding to flow into the institute.
Speaking at the NMTI’s board of trustees special board meeting last April 9, Attao said she is currently working on putting all the numbers together before she submits the institute’s fiscal year 2021 budget proposal to the Office of the Governor.
“All of these budget proposals that I’m working on are getting broken into what we are able to allocate for,” said Attao.
She said NMTI also has the American Rescue Plan grant that will help cover most of their facilities maintenance and repairs. A proposal outlining how this funding will be spent will also be submitted to the Office of the Governor on April 15.
Attao said NMTI is also anticipating approval of its Employment and Training Administration grant, which will be able to help NMTI move forward with projects. “We have gotten in touch with Mr. Mariano Iglecias, and he has connected us with Mr. Ryan Parker. …We’re able to connect and really get all that information up to speed. We are reviewing our status number, so the projects can move on,” said Attao.
As for the CNMI-Only Transitional Worker funds, Attao said at the meeting that NMTI has yet to receive funds after April 14, 2020. It was learned at the meeting that NMTI has received a monthly income of $325,000 from fiscal years 2018 to 2019, and part of fiscal year 2020. On Oct. 29, 2018, NMTI received $325,000. From Jan. 1, 2019, to March 31, 2019, another $325,000; another $325,000 from April 18, 2019 to June 7, 2019; and $325,000 from July 11, 2019 to Sept. 5, 2019. Attao says this is a total federal appropriation of $1.3 million.
For 2020, NMTI received $325,000 on Dec. 12, 2019, $325,000 on Feb. 13, 2020, and on April 14, 2020 another $325,000. Attao says they have yet to see any funding since then. She said NMTI would have received approximately a million dollars for fiscal year 2020.
