2nd Marpi Drag Race 5K this Saturday

time of 19:18. The 2nd Marpi Drag Race 5K will be held this Saturday starting with a 6am check-in time.

Run Saipan will hold its 2nd Marpi Drag Race 5K this Saturday, Feb. 5, across the road from the former Mariana Resort & Spa entrance.
Check-in time for the race is 6am with the 5-kilometer competition starting 30 minutes later at 6:30am. Run Saipan members get to avail of free entrance because of their annual membership, while non-members have to fork out $5.
Run Saipan president Edward Dela Cruz Jr. said the 2nd Marpi Drag Race 5K was named after the illegal drag racing activities that used to occur in the area.
“I coined it last year because it was the location of the infamous illegal drag strip from back in the 1990 Tinaki period. Everyone knows it was the illegal racing area back in the day. What better name than to coin it the Marpi Drag Race 5K.”
Dela Cruz said runners would greatly appreciate and enjoy the course they set Saturday.
“It’s a straight away out and back course. There’s a little incline and some curves but really easy for runners. They will definitely not get lost with this. Kind of like the drag racers of old, they just have to one-shot it out (but turn back in this case ),” he said.
The inaugural Marpi Drag Race 5K last year was topped by Shuji Kuroda after the Food & Beverage assistant manager at Grandvrio Saipan shredded the course in 19:18. He was followed by Kuu Nishimura with a time of 21:44, while Sam Culp completed the Top 3 in 22.20. There were no places for women and under-18 runners back then and a total of 37 took part in the race.
