Early voting for Northern Islands to start next week

The early voting for the Northern Islands will start next week, according to Commonwealth Election Commission administrative officer Robin N. Sablan yesterday.

Sablan said early voting for the Northern Islands will start Friday, Sept. 23, from 8:30am to 4pm.

He said they are planning to have the voting place at the CEC conference room in Susupe.

CEC needs the ballots by Sept. 22. CEC has ordered 21,680 ballots from Nebraska-based Election Systems & Software for the Nov. 8 general elections. There were a total of 19,272 registered voters in the CNMI as of yesterday.

As of yesterday, there were 184 registered voters for the Northern Islands.

Sablan said five of those registered voters are currently staying on Agrihan as of last week according to the Northern Islands mayor.

The remaining NI registered voters are staying in Saipan.

Valentino Nicky Taisacan is running for Northern Islands mayor under the Republican Party, while Jocelyn Frances Aldan Kapileo is seeking the post as an independent candidate.

Current Northern Islands mayor Vicente Santos is not seeking re-election.

Nov. 7 is the end of early voting for Northern Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
