All board and commission members are asked to resign

Gov. Arnold I. Palacios has asked all members of boards and commissions who were politically appointed by the previous Torres administration to resign to pave the way for the appointment of new board and commission members.
When asked for comments, Senate President Edith E. DeLeon Guerrero (D-Saipan) said yesterday that the Senate’s role denies or confirms the governor’s nominees.
“The call for resignations of governor appointees falls solely under the governor’s powers/discretion,” DeLeon Guerrero said.
In a memorandum issued Thursday and addressed to boards and commissions, Palacios said that, as the newly elected governor and lieutenant governor, he and David M. Apatang, are dedicated “to making fresh and meaningful changes that will help to rebuild trust and confidence and guide the CNMI into a brighter future.”
In line with this goal, Palacios said, they are asking that all politically appointed board members tender their resignations.
“This request comes out of respect for you and your work,” he said.
Palacios said the knowledge of the agency they were a board member of, and its issues will not be forgotten or discounted, and that collaboration and support is welcomed as the new administration moves forward.
Board and commission members are appointed by the incumbent administration, with the advice and consent of the Senate.
The boards and commissions are for the Commonwealth Casino Commission, Marianas Visitors Authority, Commonwealth Ports Authority, Commonwealth Utilities Corp., Commonwealth Election Commission, Commonwealth Healthcare Corp., Marianas Public Land Trust, Northern Marianas Housing Corp., Commonwealth Economic Development Authority, the CNMI Cannabis Commission, Northern Marianas College, and the Northern Marianas Technical Institute. Board and commission members serve fixed terms.
