PSS schools foes in R&J caging

Team PSS came out of the gutter and schooled their last two foes for a winning 5-3 record in the Inaugural R&J Wine and Liquor Inter-Gov’t/Business League 2023 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Their most recent conquest was CPA, who they defeated, 97-67, on Wednesday, and handed MarPac their first loss of the season last Oct. 24, 82-74.

In their game against CPA, PSS started to pull away from them in the third quarter after a close first half.

CPA got within 4 points, 39-43, at the end of the second quarter, but thanks to PSS’ more accurate jumpers and bank shots, along with the outside of 3-point man Preston Basa, PSS established their lead in the third quarter and enforced tight-defensive pressure on CPA’s offense.

CPA mainstay Donovan Brennan tried to carry his team with consecutive 3-pointers of his own, but without much help from the rest of his teammates, fell short in the end.

They could not recover from the mounting lead that PSS created from the beginning of the third quarter with great passes and assists—as well as back-to-back field goals by Melvin Sakisat and Mii Tekopua toward the end of the fourth quarter.

In the end, Sakisat was a ball magnet with 28 points, followed by Mii Tekopua’s 18 markers, and Basa’s 11 points. Brennan came away with 36 points, while David Camacho made 15.

In other results that night, Federals won a close one over Docomo, 58-52. On Tuesday, CHCC defeated CUC, 95-73; and MarPac slipped past Joeten, 82-81; on Monday, Office of the Governor edged CPA, 83-77; and Priority Care overpowered Federals, 89-69.

So far in the standings as of Wednesday, Nov. 1, MarPac leads the pack with an 8-1 record; Joeten is right behind at 7-2; Office of the Governor, Priority Care, and PSS are at 5-3 each; Federals have a 3-5 record; CPA is at 3-6; Docomo and CHCC are both 2-6; and CUC have won one and lost seven.

PSS 97 – Sakisat 28, Tekopua 18, Basa 11, Palacios 9, Valencia 8, Mendez 6, Ferrari 6, Winkfield 5, Villagomez 4, Cabrera 2.

CPA 76 – Brennan 36, Camacho 15, Mancao 8, Hambros 6, Cepeda 5, Diaz 2, Hofschneider 2, Robert 2.
