WASHINGTON, D.C. — American Samoa’s delegate in Washington, Congressman Eni Faleomavaega, has announced recently that the Department of the Interior was able to make a necessary 0.38% cut in its overall fiscal year 2000 budget without having to cut either American Samoa’s operations funding or its CIP money.

“I want to thank Secretary Babbitt and officials in the Office of Insular Affairs for their strong support of our federal funding,” said Faleomavaega.

“In this period during which the American Samoa Government is making efforts to balance its budget, it is welcome news that ASG will not also have to address a reduction in this year’s federal funding,” he said.

Under an omnibus appropriations bill passed by Congress last month, each federal department’s budget was cut 0.38% from previous level to FY 2000 levels, but each secretary was given discretion within his department to cut any given program from zero to 15%.
