Guang Zhou Restaurant is currently having a promotion where their bestsellers can be had for only $4.

Supervisor Niky Wu said among the dishes under the $4 promotion are sweet and sour pork rice, broccoli beef rice, mapo tofu rice, and spicy beef rice.

She said the promotion is an effort to bring in more customers since business has been down since the COVID-19 pandemic. Guang Zhou Restaurant was forced to shutter its doors at the end of March and reopened only in early May. “The business is not good now. It’s only a fourth of what it used to be before the coronavirus. We don’t have any tourists at all. …We still have many local customers, but some also have no work and not much spending power,” said Wu.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Wu said all of their staff are required to wear face masks and gloves, always use hand sanitizers, and wipe down all surfaces at the restaurant with disinfectant. “We’re serious in protecting not only our employees but our valued customers as well,” she said.

To comply with the government’s social distancing regulations, Guang Zhou Restaurant is only accepting 20 customers at a time.

As for how the restaurant came up with its name, the simple explanation is that the owner is from Guangzhou, which is a sprawling port city northwest of Hong Kong on the Pearl River in China. Guangzhou cuisine is also called Canton cuisine and is characterized by gentle spices, fresh ingredients, and slow and careful preparation.

“Most of our food is the city’s specialty,” said Wu, who added that their dishes are not only liked by tourists, but by residents and the Filipino expatriate community as well.

Aside from their $4 promotional meals, other can’t-miss dishes at the restaurant are black pepper beef, steamed fish, spicy fish, salt and pepper squid, crispy fried shrimps, fatty pork, Beijing sauce pork, honey walnut shrimp, spicy chicken, and Yangzhou fried rice.

Established in 2003, Guang Zhou Restaurant is located along Date St. in the heart of Garapan and a stone’s throw away from Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan. It is open from 11am to 9pm. For more information, pre-orders, and reservations, call 233-8368/989-9368.
