600 students attend Environmental Expo

The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality wrapped up its two-day Environmental Expo recently and was pleased with the outcome after over 600 students attended the event.

The Environmental Expo is an annual event conducted by BECQ to reach out to fourth grade students and to expose them, in their young age, in the preservation of the island’s pristine environment.

According Jonathan Arriola, BECQ Wastewater, Earthmoving and Erosion Control manager, the reason that the expo is geared toward fourth graders is because at the age of 9 and 10, students start to digest knowledge and the information can be retained starting at this age..

All public and private schools came out to partake in the expo. It was a wide outreach, as it is every year, said Arriola.

The students were able to get information from all the sectors of BECQ.

Government agencies that were present at the expo were the Department of Land and Natural Resource, National Resources Conservation Service, and the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. All three were there to showcase a few of their programs.

All the agencies that were present at the expo had one goal for all the students that participated. The goal was to share with the students how each department works in preserving the environment and how important it is to keep the environment clean for their health and the health of future generations, according to Arriola.

As of now, the expo has only been done on the island of Saipan. BECQ is in coordination with Rota to expand the expo to the students there. Arriola said BECQ is currently waiting for feedback from Rota regarding the expo. They want to know how many students on the island can attend the expo and when it is most convenient for the expo to be take place.
