U.S. opens door to RP mangoes

The United States, including its territories, will soon open its doors to the Philippines’ famous Guimaras mangoes, according to the country’s consul to the Northern Marianas, Julia C. Heidemann.

“We were told by our embassy in Washington that they are working for the entry of mangoes throughout the U.S. If they can enter there, they can enter here,” Heidemann said.

The federal government has agreed to have the mangoes imported since these are grown pest-free, thus, eliminating possible health risk, she said.

The mangoes will be exported from the Philippines as soon as shipment procedures are finalized said the consul.

Guimaras, an island province in the Philippine’s second biggest region — the Visayas—produces Guimaras mangoes which are widely known for its delicious taste.

Local observers said just like the Philippines, the Northern Marianas too will benefit in the process through taxes. Its importation should substitute and supplement local mangoes which have, in recent years, been infested with fruit flies and other pests.
