The Issue: Tomorrow is the last midterm election of this century as we close out the books of major events of this millennium.

Our View: The future of posterity is in your hands. Exercise your privilege in the election of quality leaders. Get out and vote!

There’s no greater time to forge brighter tomorrows than in your exercising sound judgment in the election of proven leaders with vision, determination and persistence. That day is tomorrow, Saturday, November 6th. It’s your opportunity as a voter to “make a difference”. That difference must focus on electing qualified and quality leaders to handle setting the tone of the future of these isles in the next millennium.

We’re hopeful that tomorrow’s turnout would be in the upper 90 percent. That should allow for the election of the more qualified bunch among candidates from the triad: republican, democrats and reform. This is resting right in the palm of your hands. You can set it free by voting for better qualified candidates or crush it by resorting to fancies that will make a mockery of our visions for better days ahead.

Other than deciding between the boastful senate challenger and the calm incumbent for the third senatorial district (Saipan), there are a host of other candidates for the lower house to select from. This is where your judgment is put to a test in buckling down to the responsibility of a voter in electing people with visions who can intelligently review public policies to ensure the protection of the interest of the majority. This is the primary role of a legislator or policymaker.

There’s also a greater challenge that calls for your educated and sober judgment as US Citizens–the proposal in Legislative Initiative 11-1–to deny other fellow US Citizens the privilege to vote on “land alienation” or Article XII in the Year 2001. This ill-conceived proposal isn’t a problem as it is today. Why brave a policy of discrimination on the basis of race? Our tired approach on this issue must change. We must be able to adopt the “abundance” mentality over feeble attempts to be the very source of discrimination. The NMI is Americana and there’s no more room to bask in self-serving policies that discriminate against fellow US Citizens.

The journey to strengthening our democratic institutions is a difficult and often daunting task because it involves the human equation who, more often than not, instantly engage in a confrontational approach out of greed over mutual interest of all concerns. Such boxed attitude of yester-years must go. The NMI is no longer an entity within the now defunct TT government. It is self-governing and as such we must demonstrate that in fact we can face up to getting rid of policies that breed discrimination. Such approach should set off the turn of the century on the right foot. Si Yuus Maase`!
