Inmates move in to new DOC facility

Some 28 inmates have moved in to the new Central Male Detention in Susupe last Tuesday after it was severely damaged during a prison takeover staged by prisoners protesting poor jail condition.

Some 28 inmates have moved in to the new Central Male Detention in Susupe last Tuesday after it was severely damaged during a prison takeover staged by prisoners protesting poor jail condition.

According to Division of Corrections Director Greg Castro, the new facility is equipped with a 24-hour air-conditioning system, an interview room, a control booth and bathrooms.

Majority of the occupants are violent offenders, who are only allowed to go out with escorts if they need to go to the hospital or to the court.

It will be recalled that the building was destroyed during a 17-hour prison standoff earlier this year, when inmates, led by William Sablan, took control of the facility to dramatize their complaints against inhumane condition inside the jail.

The government is hoping to complete a new prison facility next year to comply with the consent decree ordering the Commonwealth to construct a better jail. (Lucy Rosario)
