HONORING THE PAST, IMAGINE THE FUTURE TES students contribute to National Time Capsule
Fifth grade students of Tanapag Elementary School, coached by NMI Teacher of the Year Barbara Gilles, voted the theme “Freedom” to best represent U.S. history in the past and at the end of the 20th century.
The following are their contribution to the time capsule that captures dreams for the future and unique heritage and achievements, which will be part of America’s Millennium, a celebration that will be held in Washington D.C. from Dec. 31, 1999 to Jan. 2,2000.
Chris Seidler: ” In America, they have freedom because people were willing to risk their lives, their homes and even fight for it. They didn’t just give up. They fought their hardest and won the Revolutionary War and won their freedom.”
Felisha Camacho: “Francis Scott Key wrote the “Star Spangled Banner” because he was so moved after fighting the British, seeing the flag standing and knowing that America won.”
Eunice Ogumoro: “I chose freedom because it’s what we need to show our greatness. Freedom gives us the right to be who we really are. I’m happy and proud of who I am.”
Joseph Dela Santos: “Freedom makes you a whole person…mind, body and spirit. It shows you the pathway to life long learning. It even shows you the way to love, especially your parents.”
Vanessa Cabrera: “Freedom is the way to full life. It makes a path in our minds of thinking good things. It allows us to be self directed, responsible and show our greatness. Freedom makes who we are, not something we are not.”
Ayana Phillips: “I choose freedom because I love learning. Freedom means telling people to stop crime and drugs. Freedom gives us love and education.”
Lee Andrew Falig: “The best thing about me is I am free. My teacher said to me, “What does freedom mean to you?” I looked back in the past and knew that we were slaves. And then I said, “I feel happy to be free.”
Together, the Class 5A of TES said: “We chose freedom because it gives us the power to live, learn, and love. Freedom is the best thing everyone has ever had or ever known. It is the number one idea in our world. We all like freedom, even animals. But we have to learn to use our freedom by making good choices. We all need freedom to learn about everything that is all around us happening in our world in the past, the present and future.”
