On Jan. 11, 2000, after over three months in display in the lobby of Hyatt Regency Saipan, the only Volkswagen Beetle on the island and the grand prize of Hyatt’s Children of the World Charity Sweepstakes finally went to the hands of Jesus Sablan of the Sablan Construction.

Mustafa Issa, general manager of Hyatt Regency Saipan, handed the keys to the automobile to Agnes and James Sablan, who claimed the prize on behalf of their father, Mr. Jesus Sablan.

Hyatt hosted the Children of the World Charity Sweepstakes contest to fulfill their commitment to the fundraising goals of helping the children of the world and local charities.

After over 90 days of efforts to raise funds, the campaign ended on Dec. 31, 1999. A public drawing for the sweepstakes was held in Hyatt’s Gilligan’s Entertainment Center on New Years Day where 16 prizes were drawn by Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio, First Lady Sofie Tenorio, Lt. Gov. Sablan, former House Speaker Diego T. Benavente, Mrs.
Benavente, and Miss CNMI Sherlyn Cabrera.

“This promotion was our way of starting the new millennium by helping the children of our future,” said Mr. Issa. “This promotion was developed to raise money for Hyatt International’s children’s charity projects, as well as our own Commonwealth Health Center Volunteers. These are both very worthy causes and we feel very good about this effort to show our spirit of giving and commitment to the global community we do business in.”

The money raised will be donated to CHC Volunteers Association and will be used to help the local community, including the Pediatrics Ward to benefit the local children.
