97 from FSM to join military
Palikir (PINA Nius) – Ninety-seven Federated States of Micronesia candidates have passed tests which allow them to join the United States military.
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test is an examination to determine the eligibility of individuals interested in the U.S Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and US Coast Guard.
Individuals must pass to be considered eligible for enlistment.
At least 56 students from Pohnpei state passed, 25 from Yap, 21 from Chuuk, and eight from Kosrae.
Each year the United States avails this enlistment eligibility as part of the provisions in the Compact of Free Association allowing Federated States of Micronesia citizens to serve in the US Armed Forces.
Foreign Affairs Acting Secretary Ieske Iehsi said it is an effective program that provided “opportunities for our young people to acquire the skills and background to participate in various areas of training otherwise unavailable in this country.”
The test was administered late last year to 529 students from all the four states.
The U.S. Embassy has that U.S. military recruiters will be coming throughout the Federated States of Micronesia to contact those interested.
The embassy will notify each state of the scheduled arrival dates.
