DPH seeks more funding for clinic expansion work

Contractor and financial problems continue to block prompt completion of the proposed expansion of the Rota Health Center, jeopardizing efforts by the Department of the Public Health to upgrade its facilities and health services.

Contractor and financial problems continue to block prompt completion of the proposed expansion of the Rota Health Center, jeopardizing efforts by the Department of the Public Health to upgrade its facilities and health services.

To resolve the problem, Health Secretary Kevin Villagomez disclosed plans to meet with Rota legislative leaders and local heads to identify possible sources of funds.

Last week, key officials of the public health led by Mr. Villagomez made a quarter visit at the Rota clinic to assess staffing and management operations.

The secretary said efforts have been beefed up to ensure that Rota residents get the needed medical treatments and health services without being referred to Saipan.

However, Mr. Villagomez underscored the need to identify means on how to proceed with the construction and expansion of the center which was established in the late 80’s to improve the delivery of healthcare services.

At present, the clinic serves at least 60 patients each day and can admit for confinement four patients. Should there be allocations, the health chief said the clinic will be able to maximize its use.

The health department will put more pressure to municipal leaders and legislators to ensure that funds are available for the completion of the expansion work at the Health Center.

The Center now has two doctors, a dentist, a midwife, nurses and a physician assistant to man the clinic. As soon as the expansion work is completed, the health center will have a 12-bed in-patient capacity as well as X-ray and an ultrasound machine. Additional rooms will also be available to house new public clinic.

Mr. Villagomez underscored the need to immediately start with the expansion to allow the center to be more self-sustaining and responsive to the health care needs of the island’s growing population. (EGA)
