Race, Aikawa rule CIC singles tourney

Jeff Race and Kana Aikawa had to go through first set tie breakers before eventually winning their singles final matches to rule the Century Insurance tennis classic 5.0 singles for men and women held at the American Memorial Tennis Court over the weekend.

Race had to overcome a gallant stand by Todd Montgomery before prevailing on a score of 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Aikawa, for her part, walked the tightrope before subduing Matty Villanueva, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.

In other finals matches, Lawrence De Vega was upset by Jun Mahigne 7-5, 6-2 in the men’s 4.0 singles. In the men’s over 40 category, Lope Padilla claimed the title after his opponent Eli Buenaventura retired in the middle of the third game with the score at 4-6, 6-4, 3-0.

The matches for the men’s and women’s 3.0 category were also abrogated. Manny Escobar won his match against Mon Frias after the latter retired with the score pegged at 2-6, 6-4, 2-1. Apple Wuttayagon also defeated Maro Dela Torre, 4-6, 6-4, 2-1 (retired).

Aramis Dailo won the men’s 2.0 category with ease after vanquishing Manny Jardinero in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. In the mixed doubles event, the tandem of Daniel Son and Kazuma Mai lost the first set before overcoming the stiff challenge of pair Lawrence De Vega and Lucita Pasana, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

FILATA President Elmer Guzman was elated on the success of the tournament. “Thanks to Century Insurance and Coca Cola Beverage Micronesia, Inc. for making this all possible. Without them, we would not have been able to showcase our best tennis talents on the island.

American Memorial Park Manager Chuck Sayon also thanked Tan Holdings Corporation for its long-term commitment to sponsoring sporting events on the island, especially tennis.

Century Insurance Manager Andy Del Mundo said that his company will again sponsor the event next year.
