CUC board agrees to offer CFO position
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board of directors has agreed to offer the position of the chief financial officer to one of four candidates, according to board chair Janice A. Tenorio on Tuesday.
Tenorio said in an interview that the panel already made a decision about the selection of the CFO position so right now they are in the offering stage.
Rodolfo Urbano, who is a U.S. certified public accountant, has been designated acting CFO after Greg Cruz declined to renew his contract that expired on May 21, 2023. Urbano did not apply for the position.
Acting CUC executive director Betty G. Terlaje said in an interview on Tuesday that they already made an offer and are just waiting for the selected candidate to accept the CFO position.
Terlaje said there were four candidates interviewed and the team met and selected two, then they made an offer to one.
She said three candidates are from off-island and one from on-island.
Terlaje said they cannot disclose other details of the selected candidate for protection of the applicant’s confidentiality.
She said details of that candidate will be announced once he or she accepts CUC’s offer.
Regarding the executive director, Tenorio said professional engineer Christopher Theisen, who is from California, is scheduled to arrive June 1, 2024 or sometime in early June.
Tenorio said Theisen asked to start in June so he can process his belongings.
“Relocation that’s a big move,” Tenorio said.
The board approved last February a two-year contract for Theisen.
The executive director’s position has been vacant since Gary P. Camacho resigned on Feb. 21, 2023. Terlaje has been the acting executive director since April 2023.
Under the court-mandated orders called stipulated orders, CUC will be penalized if critical positions such as the CFO and the executive director, are not filled within 150 days.
CUC has agreed to pay the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency $108,000 to settle a $162,000 fine for failing to timely fill critical vacant positions.
