Day of Unity to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month

In observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence will hold a Day of Unity event this Saturday, with this year’s theme “Solidarity for Safety” at the CPA Airport Field from 11am to 4pm.

“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and our signature event during this month is the Day of Unity. Since 2012, the coalition has proudly hosted this event, and each year brings something special. We launched a new campaign that addresses the unique needs of our community, allowing us to introduce fresh ideas and perspectives. Our commitment to innovation ensures that every year stands out and reflects our evolving understanding of domestic violence. This makes the Day of Unity a crucial part of our ongoing efforts to support victims and survivors and raise awareness in our community,” said NMCADSV Communications manager Ha’Ane Marie Eugenio.

She added that tying into the 2024 Domestic Violence Awareness Month theme, “Solidarity for Safety,” the Day of Unity’s main highlight is fostering a sense of community as we join together to advocate for an end to domestic violence in the CNMI. The Day of Unity has its roots in the 1980s when advocates across the U.S. united to raise awareness and speak out against domestic violence. This event serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to support survivors, promote healing, and advocate for safety in our community.

The Day of Unity is also a celebration of cultures coming together, and the program lineup is filled with vibrant cultural entertainment, that will feature talented dancers and singers. The attendees can look forward to performances from the Polksai Cultural Dancers, Polynesian Cultural Dance Performers, Kagman High School Refaluwasch Club, Saipan Southern High School Nesian Club, Marianas High School Cultural Club, Saipan Awaodori Team, Anna Rose Deleon Guerrero, Joshua Paradise, Netty Cee, Profound Bandits, Tipiyew Bwiibwiis, and the Voices of the Marianas.

Various organizations will participate in the event, and each organization will have its exhibitor booths and engaging activities for children. These include the Rotaract Club of Saipan, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Bookmobile, Micronesian Legal Services Corp., Division of Youth Services-Child Protective Services, Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.-Community Guidance Center, the Northern Marianas College’s The Club of Artists, Karidat Social Services, Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy Systems, Inc., CNMI Young Pacific Leaders, Office of the Attorney General-Criminal Division, Northern Marianas Athletics, CNMI Department of Public Safety, CNMI Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, and American Red Cross-NMI Chapter.

Additionally, local food and drink vendors like Oh My Grill, Java Joe’s, and Sweet7Oh will be on site. Attendees can participate in different activities, including bouncy houses, a Carabao cart, bubble stations, free face painting, and an obstacle course facilitated by Northern Marianas Athletics.

“We strive to provide a welcoming space for all families, encouraging a sense of togetherness and joy,” added Eugenio.

NMCADSV would like to thank the Tan Siu Lin Foundation, Commonwealth Ports Authority, CNMI Department of Public Safety, and Ben Ki for their generous contributions.

Eugenio said the event will proceed as planned, even if it rains. However, the safety of the attendees is their priority and if heavy downpours or severe weather conditions occur, they will assess the situation and will make necessary decisions. She encouraged the community to stay informed through their social media platforms @EndviolenceNMI for any updates.
