‘Dewey was never employed at SCS’

The Saipan Community School denies that fugitive Charles Lee Dewey III, aka Carter Allen Widmor, was ever employed to teach there.

In an emotional letter he read in open court last Wednesday, Dewey essentially shared that he is a victim of false accusations regarding the rape and sexual misconduct involving minors charges he currently faces in Indiana.

In his letter, Dewey claimed that, while on Saipan to escape the charges he faces in Indiana, he taught children at private Christian schools, one of them being Saipan Community School.

However, Saipan Community School director Stephen Dame says this is false and that Dewey was never a teacher at SCS.

“Charles Lee Dewey, known to us as Carter Widmor, has never been employed [nor] volunteered to teach for Saipan Community School. He has never been associated with the school’s music program in any way. No music lessons were ever sponsored by Saipan Community School or Saipan Community Church nor were these organizations involved in assisting him with music lessons in any way,” he said.

Dame also serves as senior pastor of Saipan Community Church, which runs the school.

Dewey, in an attempt to paint a positive picture of his character for the court, also shared that he was an active volunteer at Saipan Community Church and stated that the church’s pastor can vouch for his character, ultimately insisting he is not a “monster” capable of the crimes he is being accused of.

Dame said this is another false representation.

“Charles Lee Dewey III was never an ‘active’ volunteer at Saipan Community Church and did not have any ‘position’ within the church. He had served a couple times in setting up and cleaning up. While he did occasionally attend church services, he hasn’t been in attendance for at least the last six months,” he said.

In Dewey’s letter, he also stated that the extensive list of charges against him—which includes rape and sexual misconduct with a minor—were false.

Instead, Dewey claims it was the alleged victims’ father and brother who kidnapped him, tied him up, and brutally beat him and tortured him.

“I managed to escape and call 911. However, the police arrested me instead. The family told police I broke in and violated the daughters. The more proof I showed that I was kidnapped, including messages used to lure me and photos that I was tied up, [police] would not believe me,” he said.

“At the time, I was just a 23-year-old who had never been in trouble before. I was terrified by all the false charges piling up against me [so I] ran away. Anyone who read the probable cause affidavit on my arrest warrant can see there’s quite literally no proof. It hurts so bad to show so much proof and still be treated like some pervert. It truly is ‘guilty until proven innocent’ these days,” he said.

Dewey also stated in his letter that he is not violent nor as “sick” as many now believe him to be, citing that he has worked closely with children while on Saipan.

“Anyone who knew me as Carter will know I am not a violent person [nor] a sick criminal. Many of my recent jobs included teaching music at the Saipan Community School, teaching English at EUCON, and Web designing at the Northern Marianas International School. All involved me working closely with children. Anyone who knows me knows what type of person I am,” he said.

Dewey apologized for deceiving others with his Carter Widmor alias, saying he did that to protect them from being arrested for helping him.

Dewey remains under Department of Corrections custody where he will remain pending his extradition to Indiana. He is wanted in Indiana on multiple charges of rape and sexual misconduct involving minors.

Dewey is set to return to court on Saipan on Feb. 28, for another follow-up hearing.

Dewey, who has been going by the alias Widmor since he fled the state of Indiana to Saipan back in 2022, was arrested last Jan. 26 by federal and local law enforcers. He was arrested at the Kagman Community Health Center where he worked.

According to court documents, Dewey faces multiple cases involving rape, sexual misconduct with minors, sexual battery, child solicitation, possession of child pornography, dissemination of matter harmful to a minor, and more in Indiana.
