GRMC hosting annual Patient Safety Awareness Week training

DEDEDO, Guam—Guam Regional Medical City is conducting its annual, hospital-wide Patient Safety Awareness Week training for employees from Tuesday, March 12, through Thursday, March 14. PSAW is a national, annual recognition week created to promote education on healthcare safety.

Each year, GRMC’s Quality Management and Patient Safety teams collaborate with clinical and non-clinical departments to provide training on current policies and procedures pertinent

to patient safety.

This year, GRMC is expanding its focus to include the Human Experience, encompassing the experiences of patients, employees, and the community. The Human Experience represents the totality of interactions influenced by our organization’s culture, which collectively shape patient perception throughout the continuum of care. Additionally, we are emphasizing Healthcare Equity, which entails ensuring fair and just opportunities for individuals to achieve their optimal level of health.

During PSAW week, specialists from multiple departments will have presentation booths throughout the hospital, allowing employees to fulfill their required trainings. Featured healthcare safety topics will include:

• National Patient

• Safety Goals

• Fall Prevention

• Suicide Prevention

• Medication Error Prevention

• Pressure Ulcer Prevention

• Hand Hygiene

• Time Out

• Labeling of Specimen

• Ergonomics

• Reporting of Work-related

• Injuries

GRMC Quality and Patient Safety specialist Michael Khan shared, “GRMC is proactively preventing harm from occurring.” He explained that the hospital has been consistent in this annual training since opening in 2015 to foster collaborative growth in the quality of GRMC’s patient care. Khan also emphasized the importance of continual training to ensure that GRMC team members are updated with the latest patient safety practices and

policies. “This annual training empowers everyone to better equip themselves with the best practices and hospital policies and procedures to safely and efficiently conduct our duties, said Khan.

Trainings will occur throughout GRMC at the Lower Lobby, Main Lobby, fourth and fifth floors, as follows:

• Tuesday, March 12, 9am-12pm

• Wednesday, March13, 9am-12pm
