Lujan sworn in as federal Public Defender for Guam

A daughter of Guam, Leilani V. Lujan, has been formally sworn in as the first Chamorro female federal Public Defender for Guam as well as in the nation.

Appointed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of John Gorman, Lujan served as an assistant federal Public Defender since 2013.

In addition to her public service experience, Lujan has over a decade of criminal litigation experience, practicing law in the private sector in Hawaii before returning home to Guam.

Guam Chief Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood said, “Ms. Lujan is a zealous advocate who always represents her client to the best of her razor-honed abilities. Not only is she a skilled attorney but she genuinely respects and has compassion for those she serves. There is little doubt that Ms. Lujan will continue her legacy of public service in meeting the challenges and responsibilities of this appointment.”

A public and more formal swearing-in ceremony for Lujan will be held in January 2024. (PR)
