MANGO goals align with CNMI’s comprehensive sustainable dev’t plans

The CNMI has developed a Comprehensive Sustainable Development Plan that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals of the Marianas Alliance of Non-Governmental Organization.

This, according to MANGO Communications and Membership manager Shawna Babauta as she spoke before the Rotary Club of Saipan yesterday afternoon at the Crowne Plaza Resort Saipan.

According to Babauta, the SDGs are a universal call to action established by the United Nations to address global challenges by 2030. The Office of Planning Development, along with partners, created a document outlining the CSDP.

Babauta mentioned that nonprofits can leverage the SDGs to benefit the economy and that is by fostering collaboration and innovation and enhancing community well-being.

She shared that nonprofit sector employment ranks as the third-largest workforce in the U.S. following the retail and manufacturing sectors.

“Nonprofits account for around 12.5 million jobs, which is approximately 10% of the total private workforce,” she said.

She added that nonprofit employment tends to be concentrated in sectors like healthcare, education, and social assistance.

“The nonprofit sector in the CNMI is underdeveloped but has great potential to enhance service capacity through partnerships with public agencies.”

Furthermore, Babauta discussed how nonprofit data can help which is through understanding economic impact, being informed of policy decisions, resource allocation, promoting collaboration, and enhancing transparency and accountability.

The data sets include employment statistics, revenue and funding services, program expenditures, economic output, and sustainable development goals.

The nonprofit sector is needed as Babauta emphasized because it is a vast and diverse and includes most of the nation’s premier hospitals, universities, almost all of its orchestras and opera companies, theaters, etc.

The nonprofit sector is needed for religious congregations, environmental advocacy, civil rights, family, and children services, neighborhood development, community health facilities, foundations, antipoverty, hospitals, and universities.

MANGO’s mission is nurturing the nonprofit community in the CNMI for sustainability by facilitating their growth through guidance, training, and services. Its vision is to have a strong, stable nonprofit sector providing services to the CNMI, increasing overall community health and well-being.

MANGO services include establishing a nonprofit, board training, sustainability, strategic planning, non-profit management, financial management, proposal writing, accounting services, organizational resources needing analysis, and notary services.

Babauta’s presentation was concluded with a group photo with the Rotary Club of Saipan officers.
