MVA: Safety first for tomorrow’s Hell of Marianas

The Marianas Visitors Authority is urging the Saipan community to warmly welcome cyclists competing in tomorrow’s Hell of the Marianas Century Cycle, with priority on keeping competitors safe.

As of Nov. 30, 157 cyclists from five countries and territories are scheduled take to the island’s roadways beginning at 6:30am at Mariana Resort & Spa. Cyclists will travel south on Beach Road to Koblerville, proceed to Kagman, Capital Hill, and Talofofo, and then down Capital Hill to As Matuis and Marpi, finishing around noontime.

The race, jointly organized the MVA and Northern Mariana Islands Cycling Federation, attracts cyclists from around the world to take on the island’s challenging terrain. To ensure a safe and enjoyable race for all, the organizers are urging all dog owners to leash their pets and all drivers to drive with caution along the race route for the duration of the race.

“Safety is a first priority for us during the race, and we are asking the full cooperation of our community to make sure that each of our cyclists starts and finishes the race safely,” said MVA managing director Christopher A. Concepcion. “We want to avoid any incident of cyclists having accidents because of unleashed dogs, so we ask all dog owners to ensure their pets are fenced or tied during the race. Also, we remind all drivers to drive slowly and to follow the direction of traffic officers at intersections along the route. A big thanks to all for supporting tourism with these small but important efforts.”

Participating countries to date are South Korea, Japan, Russia, Guam, and The Marianas. Started in 2007, Hell of the Marianas winds its way through Saipan’s hills, valleys, and scenic byways. Participants must navigate 4,900 feet of ascents, including steep climbs and fast descents, making it a true test of endurance and skill. The event is open to both amateur and professional riders. The race has become an important part of Saipan’s sporting and cultural scene and has helped raise awareness of the island’s unique natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Racers love that,” Concepcion added. “Together, we can help build the reputation of Hell of The Marianas in the region and around the world as one of the safest, most enjoyable, and must-do races for cyclists.”
