Manglona nomination advances to full US Senate

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has advanced to the full Senate the nomination of Ramona V. Manglona, to be judge for the U.S. District Court of the Northern Mariana Islands.

This was learned from a news release issued by the office of U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The next stage is for the full U.S. Senate to vote on Manglona’s nomination.

Manglona is the current chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the NMI, but her first 10-year term expired in 2021. President Joe Biden has nominated her for the position for another 10-year term.

Manglona’s nomination was one of three judicial nominations the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee recommended to the full Senate last week, “continuing the committee’s work filling judicial and executive vacancies with highly qualified, diverse candidates who help ensure the fair and impartial administration of the American justice system.”

“I would like to thank Senators Lankford and Mullin and the White House for their bipartisan commitment to filling these two district court vacancies in Oklahoma. Their willingness to work together has resulted in two outstanding nominees, which we advanced this morning. Today’s votes continue Senate Democrats’ efforts to bring balance to the federal judiciary by advancing nominees who are committed to fair justice for all to the full Senate, and we’re moving ahead with our efforts,” said Durbin.

Following the confirmation of Judge Loren AliKhan to the District of D.C., the Senate has confirmed 161 judges to lifetime appointments on the federal bench under Durbin and during the Biden administration. Now, 19 lifetime judges—including three circuit court nominees and 14 district court nominees—are eligible for a vote on the Senate floor.

Aside from Manglona, the two others whose nominations also advanced to the full Senate are Sara E. Hill, to be U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Oklahoma; and John David Russell, to be U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Oklahoma.

Unlike most federal district court judges, who have lifetime appointments, the Marianas District Court judge, as well as those in Guam and the Virgin Islands, receive 10-year terms. (Saipan Tribune)
