NMC remembers fallen Proa
Following the revelation of the identities of the victims in the Finasisu murders, it was determined that one of the victims, Shuping “Lily” Liu, was a student of the Northern Marianas College. NMC has since planned a moment of silence in honor of their fallen fellow Proa.
Saipan Tribune learned that Northern Marianas College president Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero sent out a mass email last Wednesday to all Proas regarding the recent loss of Liu.
Saipan Tribune learned Liu has been taking classes at NMC in addition to serving as an English teacher for a local private school.
In his email, Deleon Guerrero asked that a moment of silence be observed in honor of Liu’s memory.
“I ask our Proa tribe to take some time to observe a moment of silence to honor the memory of our fellow Proa and the others that are involved in this senseless tragedy,” said Deleon Guerrero.
The NMC president also stated that NMC counselor and administrators will be working with the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. to offer counseling to students and employees who may need it.
“In the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident, our counsellors and administrators will be working closely with the CHCC Community Guidance Center to offer counselling services to students and employees who may need access to them. I urge students to reach out to advisors or counsellors if you need help, guidance, or just someone to talk to. We are here to help and support each other during this difficult time. And let us continue to keep the families of our fellow Proa in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.
The investigation into the Finasisu murders continues with the Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Investigation Bureau weeding through persons of interests they have recently identified.
During a press conference last week, DPS spokesperson Fred Sato said that 911 received a call last Thursday morning from a woman who stated that there might be injured people in an apartment in Finasisu. It was later determined that the female caller is a colleague of Liu. Both are teachers at a local private school.
The woman reportedly told police that Liu had not reported for work, so she went to their residence to do a welfare check and panicked at the sight of blood when she looked through one of the home’s windows, so she immediately looked for help.
At the scene and immediately upon entering the home, police found traces of blood leading into one of the bedrooms, Sato said. Upon entering the bedroom, police immediately saw Jingdong Wang lying on the floor in a pool of blood, with Liu lying nearby and whose face was also covered in blood.
It was also recently learned that police had received a call from Wang and Liu stating that their home had been broken into. This happened two weeks prior to the gruesome killing. DPS continues to investigate whether this is tied to the murders.
DPS has also ruled out domestic violence and continues to investigate whether the killing was random or premeditated.
DPS continues to ask for the public’s help and to say something if they hear or see anything.
About 20 men and women from the DPS Criminal Investigation Bureau are currently working on the case with help from federal partners.
