NWS: Ewiniar poses no threat to Marianas

The National Weather Service based off of Tiyan, Guam says Typhoon Ewiniar (formerly Invest 93W), sits well west of the Marianas.

Ewiniar poses no threat to the CNMI, Guam, Republic of Palau, or Yap State as it heads generally northeastward into the North Pacific. It may cross over the far western part of the NWS Marianas Area of Responsibility requiring public advisories to be issued every 6 hours while passing through CNMI waters, according to NWS.

NWS also states that although dry conditions remain in place throughout the midweek, a possible uptick in showers can be expected toward the end of the week.

According to NWS’ weekly regional outlook, weak ridging (high atmospheric pressure) will keep dry conditions in place across the Marianas at least through midweek with a possible uptick in showers later this week.

“Mostly sunny skies and fair weather prevail across Guam and the CNMI, with moderate trades and only a few spotty showers. Deeper moisture will keep south of the Marianas a few days, but could approach the region later in the week. Expect combined seas of 3 to 5 feet on the coastal waters, perhaps with a long-period northwest swell building in from Typhoon Ewiniar later this week,” said NWS.

As for the rest of the region, NWS forecasts relatively fair weather is expected through the weekend at Yap and Palau with variably cloudy skies and some showers as weak surface troughs push through the region.

“Not necessarily a dry week ahead, passing showers will bring continued relief for current and ongoing dry conditions. Combined seas on the waters will be around 3 to 5 feet. Farther east, across Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae and Majuro, an active ITCZ is generating showers and thunderstorms across Pohnpei and Chuuk, while drier weather is found near Kosrae and Majuro. Showers and thunderstorms at Chuuk and Pohnpei will ease up by midweek, but weak surface troughs will bring passing showers across most locations this week. Combined seas will be around 4 to 6 feet,” said NWS.

As for drought conditions, NWS says a number of islands saw some improvement in drought conditions, thanks to recent showers.

However, extreme to exceptional drought persists across Yap State and the CNMI.

Drought conditions across Yap should see some improvement this week in the weekly analysis, due to widespread showers last week from Invest 93W. Despite showers at Wotje, northern islands/atolls of the RMI remain very dry. Near-normal rainfall is likely for most locations in the coming weeks.
