NWS: Marianas should expect mix of showers into the weekend

The National Weather Service based off of Tiyan, Guam has issued its regional forecast for the week stating the Marianas can expect mixed showers into the end of the week.

According to NWS’ regional overview report, partly sunny skies with some showers and east trades prevail across Guam and the CNMI as a surface trough pushes westward through the Marianas.

“Expect a mix of showers into the weekend due to converging trades at the surface, and with the influence of a tropical upper tropospheric trough passing just to the north. Gentle to moderate trades and combined seas of 3 to 4 feet will prevail through the end of the week,” said NWS.

Meanwhile, NWS reports that a weak disturbance centered southeast of Koror will bring showers and thunderstorms to Yap and Palau for another day or two before pushing west-northwest into the Philippine Sea.

“Showers and thunderstorms are seen across Palau and western Yap State and will linger at least through today. Expect relatively improved conditions for the weekend, but still with episodes of showers and gentle winds. Farther east, across Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Majuro, relatively fair weather persists across the region with moderate east-northeast trades and spotty trade wind showers. The ITCZ will become more active later this week bringing wetter weather to eastern and central FSM, and to a lesser extent, the Marshall Islands. Islands in the RMI north of 10N will remain in a much drier pattern into early next week,” said NWS.

NWS said the circulation is not expected to develop as it heads generally west-northwest through the Republic of Palau, bringing showers and thunderstorms, the next couple of days.

Elsewhere in the NWS Guam Area of Responsibility, tropical cyclone activity is not expected through the next seven days.

Drought outlook

Extreme (D3) drought conditions persist across these islands and the CNMI, but general improvement is expected in coming weeks as seasonal showers begin to return.

NWS urges the community to visit the U.S. Drought Monitor and the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands web pages for more information on drought conditions across the region.
