New CUC TMO Wehlburg finds her job challenging

Rachel Wehlburg, the new technical manager for oil at the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., is enjoying the challenges of her job and the people at CUC.

As CUC’s TMO, Wehlburg oversees all the requirements of the U.S. District Court for the NMI’s stipulated order No. 2, which is a federal order that focuses on oil issues such as repairing and replacing infrastructure, managing tanks and pipelines, and spill prevention and response.

Wehlburg said in an interview on Thursday that, as TMO, she oversees all oil-related issues like the disposal of petroleum contaminated products and makes sure that CUC complies with requirements and regulations of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Environmental & Coastal Quality, Coast Guard, and Clean Air Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Wehlburg started as TMO last June. Her professional background is maritime. She graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“I sailed deep sea for eight years under the…Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association. And now I’m here,” she said.

Before joining CUC, Wehlburg was sailing maritime with APL with a route between Saipan, Guam, Korea, and Japan.

“So I just wanted to get a job shoreside because I was sick of being gone half a year with my job. So I decided to try and find work here and I saw the opening,” she said.

She lives on Saipan with her wife and their son, They’ve been here for almost five years now.

Wehlburg was born in Florida, but she and her family moved to Washington, D.C. when she was very young.
