Ocean advocates welcome MacDuff appointment
Local and national ocean advocates are celebrating the Department of the Interior’s decision to appoint Dr. Sean MacDuff as the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Superintendent for the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument.
Local and national ocean advocates see MacDuff’s appointment as a significant step toward preserving the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument, prompting widespread enthusiasm and acclaim.
MacDuff, a renowned marine biologist, will be based on Saipan, bringing his extensive knowledge and passion for marine conservation to this unique and vital ecosystem. His office will be based on Saipan.
“Dr. Macduff is an inspiration to all Indigenous islanders who aspire to pursue academic and professional excellence in marine science. His passion, dedication and expertise will surely benefit the conservation and management of our monument.,” said former lawmaker Sheila Babauta, who chairs the Saipan-based nonprofit group Friends of the Mariana Trench.
Ignacio “Ike” V. Cabrer, who is a board member emeritus of the same group, adds his endorsement: “Dr. MacDuff is a good marine biologist contributing to the understanding and restoration of our coral reefs. It’s so important that we have a son of the Marianas in this role. I look forward to working with him to protect our ocean.”
Laurie Peterka, executive director of the Friends of the Mariana Trench, applauded the appointment: “What wonderful news! Dr. MacDuff is the perfect choice for the superintendent of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge in coral reef resilience and restoration, as well as a deep respect and appreciation for the culture and history of the Marianas.”
Angelo Villagomez from the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C., is similarly excited by the appointment: “Having a leader like Dr. MacDuff at the helm of the monument is what we envisioned 15 years ago when we started advocating for the protection of the Mariana Trench. I am beyond excited that he will be our new superintendent.”
Dr. Larisa Ford, retired USFWS and former superintendent of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument, commended the Department of the Interior’s commitment to Indigenous knowledge and leadership: “So pleased that the Department of [the] Interior is putting their commitment to Indigenous knowledge and leadership into effect at the field level! Congratulations, Dr. MacDuff.”
According to an FOMT statement, MacDuff’s appointment is a testament to his outstanding contributions to marine science and his dedication to preserving the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument. “His leadership is expected to further advance the conservation efforts and protection of this unique and invaluable marine ecosystem.” it added.
